City of College Park Celebrates Small Business Saturday

The City recognizes and celebrates local businesses and their contributions to our economy and community.

The City of College Park joins communities across the country in celebrating local small businesses by recognizing the Saturday after Thanksgiving as Small Business Saturday. During the City Council meeting on November 8, Mayor Patrick L. Wojahn proclaimed November 26th, 2022 as Small Business Saturday in College Park. Established in 2010 by American Express, Small Business Saturday encourages shoppers to support local businesses by shopping small. “Small businesses in College Park create jobs and shopping opportunities for residents; from restaurants to retail shops, local businesses ensure the community has access to the services and goods they need,” said Mayor Wojahn.

The City is home to over 1,000 businesses that generate more than $550 million annually in retail sales. College Park has a variety of small and locally owned and operated businesses like Uptown Cheapskate, Board and Brew, MOM’s Organic Market, Taqueria Habanero, Proteus Bicycles & Brews, 3 Stripes, Hanami, Hair and Space Blowdry and Beauty Bar, and Ritchie’s Colombian Restaurant, with more coming in the future months like Shop Made in Maryland, taïm, and GrillMarx.

Small businesses are vital through their impact on the local economy and community. According to the United States Small Business Administration, Maryland is home to 634,622 small businesses. In the state, 43% of businesses are women-owned and 36.6% are minority-owned. The jobs created by local businesses also uplift individuals and families in our area. In Maryland, women make up 49.2% of workers, while racial minorities make up 42%. Overall, small businesses employ 46.8% of employees in the private sector in the United States.

Small Business Saturday is a great way to support the local businesses that significantly impact our communities. For this November 26 and beyond, help support a local College Park business by shopping small.
